Speaking on Onua FM in an interview with Christian Agyei Frimpong, Ghanaian gospel artiste Patience Nyarko has made public that, Ghanaians have over rated Joe mettle even though he is not the best gospel artiste in Ghana.
According to Patience Nyarko ,Joe Mettle doesn’t deserve all the hype and accolades he’s being given, since most of his songs are covers and rearranged old Pentecost and Methodist hymms or songs. She further revealed that, there are better Ghanaian gospel musicians who are good song writers and therefore deserve more accolades.
She said ” I dont want people to think Joe Mettle is the only Gospel musician, I am telling you, the way you want to rate Joe Mettle, you are giving him problem. When it comes to English songs, how many songs does Joe mettle have? He still sings songs from Pentecost. If Methodist and other churches ask Joe Mettle to stop singing their songs, what will be the grounds for Him?
Look at musicians who write songs in Ghana look at Nacee, Diana Hamilton, Joyce Blessing, You disregard all of us because we don’t sing in English”.
This came up when the issue of language barrier came up in the discussion as a contributing factor to the low visibility of Ghanaian gospel artistes on the international music market. Alordia, an event and music promoter had earlier said in an interview on the same show that what makes Joe Mettle more marketable on the international market is the use of English in his songs and the solid brand he has built for himself. Responding to this, Patience intimated that Joe does not even have a lot of English songs and that most of his songs are sampled from old songs which are in the local languages. She said it is not true that Joe is the only artiste in Ghana who has international appeal.
